Why we invested in Foundation EGI, the AI platform revolutionizing engineering knowledge — Samsung Next

Share

In today’s manufacturing landscape, engineering processes remain largely manual and disorganized, resulting in an estimated $8T in economic waste. Foundation EGI addresses this challenge with their pioneering Engineering General Intelligence (EGI) platform that transforms messy, natural language instructions into structured, codified programming.

Unlike generic AI solutions, Foundation’s domain-specific approach is perfectly suited for specialized engineering tasks. Their technology enables unprecedented automation and efficiency throughout the entire product lifecycle management process through three key innovations:

  1. A domain-specific language (DSL) that applies LLMs to Computational Design and Manufacturing workflows

  2. A Workflow Automation Manager that orchestrates complex document generation tasks

  3. Verticalized subject matter expert LLMs that outperform generic models in engineering contexts

What stands out is how Foundation tackles a well-known problem with a practical, focused solution. Their initial focus on documentation and parts sourcing targets the most painful areas first. Documentation, often the most tedious yet critical part of engineering, can now be completed more than 1,000x faster, reducing six-month cycles to minutes.

Foundation EGI emerged from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) with co-founders Mok Oh (CEO), Professor Wojciech Matusik (CTO), and Michael Foshey assembling a team with deep engineering, industrial, startup, and AI experience. This founding team uniquely combines academic excellence with entrepreneurial success. Mok’s experience as a two-time founder and former Samsung executive complements Wojciech’s expertise as a tenured MIT professor in computational design and manufacturing. We joined their oversubscribed $7.6M seed round alongside E14 Fund, Union Lab Ventures, Stata Venture Partners, GRIDS Capital, and Henry Ford III — a testament to the strength of their vision.

Foundation is solving a critical challenge: capturing engineering know-how for the next generation. In traditional industries, when experienced people retire, their knowledge often retires with them. Foundation ensures that expertise doesn’t get lost, but is rather encoded and scaled.

We believe Foundation EGI will emerge as the dominant platform for engineering AI because they’ve built a solution tailored to the product engineering services market. Their focus on concrete, measurable improvements sets them apart from more generalized approaches.

In a manufacturing landscape hungry for innovation, Foundation isn’t offering an incremental improvement—they’re creating a new paradigm that transforms how engineering expertise is captured, applied, and scaled. We couldn’t be more excited to back this exceptional team on their mission to revolutionize engineering with AI.
